Graduate Certificate in Counseling with a K-12 Emphasis

The requirements of the Certificate in Counseling with a K-12 emphasis would be flexible in order to meet the specific needs of students seeking to meet jurisdiction requirements for credentialing or licensing as a K-12 school counselor in the state of North Dakota; therefore, there will be a Track A and a Track B leading to this certificate.

Track A caters to students who already have a Master’s degree in either mental health or community agency counseling. Given that UND school counseling faculty will need to verify that certificate students have met the necessary professional competencies, Track A certificate students will be required to take three school counseling content and/or practice-based courses along with a professional ethics course (22 credits) here at UND.

Track B caters to students who already have a Master’s degree in Education. Track B certificate students will be required to take 11 school counseling content and/or practice-based courses along with a professional ethics course (43 credits) here at UND.

If the applicant does not have a North Dakota state teaching license (regardless of the field in which they earned their Master’s Degree), they must complete coursework in three content areas, as follows: (a) educational psychology; (b) classroom management; and (c) instruction methods. Within the Counseling Master’s Program with a K12 emphasis, we prefer if students take these three courses prior to enrolling in the program; however, we will allow these pre-requisites to be completed within the first academic year of the student’s program of study.
