Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science

Requirements

Students that have earned a Bachelor’s of Science or Bachelor’s of Arts degree from a regionally accredited college or university, or will earn a Bachelor’s Degree from a current Western Collegiate Alliance for Medical Laboratory Science (WCAMLS) affiliate, are eligible for the Certificate in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) Program. The Certificate in MLS Program includes the following requirements:

II. MLS Professional Program

Participation in the MLS Professional Program (PP) requires that students be matriculated to both UND and the  MLS PP.  Application and acceptance to UND is different than application and acceptance to the MLS PP.  A separate application is required for each, and admission into one does not guarantee admission to the other.  Similarly, students must remain in good standing with both UND and the MLS PP to advance.  Applicable policies, including route-specific MLS PP conditions/restrictions, can be found in the UND Academic Catalog, UND and MLS websites, and the Undergraduate MLS Handbook.

Upon successful completion of the MLS PP, students earn a certificate from UND, and are eligible for certification and entry-level practice as a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

MLS Professional Program Admission Requirements

  1. Timely completion of required pre-professional curriculum prior to the start of the MLS PP, including:  A final grade of C or higher in all required pre-professional MLS courses; and no more than one letter grade of D for either a required pre-professional math or science course
  2. Cumulative GPA of >2.8 on a scale of 4.0
  3. Acknowledgement of program-specific Essential Functions and School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) Technical Standards
  4. Completion of a criminal background check in accordance with SMHS and/or Clinical Site policy
  5. Be accepted/matriculated to UND as an undergraduate student

Medical Laboratory Science Categorical Certificates

The Categorical Certificate program route qualifies students for certification and professional employment at the Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) level within a specific categorical area of the laboratory including:  Clinical Chemistry; Hematology; Immunohematology (Blood Bank); and Microbiology.

Upon successful completion of Categorical Certificate requirements the student receives a certificate(s) from UND, and is eligible for entry-level practice and national American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) examination(s) at the MLS level in specific certificate area(s), as follows:

  • Clinical Chemistry Categorical Certificate:  ASCP BOC Chemistry (C) Exam
  • Hematology Categorical Certificate:  ASCP BOC Hematology (H) Exam
  • Immunohematology Categorical Certificate:  ASCP BOC Blood Bank (BB) Exam
  • Microbiology Categorical Certificate:  Microbiology (M) Exam
  • All four Categorical Certificates (equivalent to Certificate in MLS):  ASCP BOC Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) Exam

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admittance to the UND MLS Categorical Program(s), the student must:

  • Hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university
  • Have a minimum of 20 semester credit hours in the biological, chemical and/or medical sciences (these credits can be part of, or in addition to the B.S. degree)
  • Have the support of an accredited medical laboratory to facilitate the student’s clinical experience
  • Provide acknowledgement of program-specific Essential Functions and School of Medicine & Health Sciences (SMHS) Technical Standards
  • Complete a criminal background check in accordance with SMHS and/or Clinical Site policy
  • Be accepted/matriculated to UND as an undergraduate student
