Certificate in Indigenous Digital Humanities and Cultural Collections Care

The ability to create and curate digital collections, as well as to help care for material culture items across mediums, in a way that is informed by the study of histories and cultures of Indigenous peoples is highly valued by educational institutions and museums across tribal communities and throughout the US.

Courses are designed with these goals for student learning:

  • to introduce the role of curators in the preservation of cultural lifeways and histories of Indigenous peoples;
  • to analyze how curators shape the representation of cultural lifeways and histories of Indigenous peoples;
  • to offer hands-on experience in the management of cultural collections in academic and community-based contexts;
  • to create opportunities to write grants and policies related to the management of cultural collections;
  • to provide hands-on experience in the production of digital collections;
  • to promote culturally competent and ethical curation of collections and dissemination of information.

The certificate is comprised of 12 credit hours. English courses taken for the certificate, with the exception of the required ENGL 428, Practicum in Digital Humanities, do not count towards the English major or minor. The following courses are required for the certificate:
