Request Type Degree Title Change
Requested Effective Change Date F2020
Title Master of Science in Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering
College: College of Engineering & Mines
Department: Mechanical Engineering
Academic Level: Graduate
Current Title: Master of Science in Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering
Proposed Title: Master of Science in Systems Engineering
Description: We are requesting a Master’s degree name change from Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering to a Master’s degree in Systems Engineering to better meet industry demand. In addition to better meeting employment market demand, Systems Engineering also allows for greater flexibility, as a typical Systems Engineering program offers a core set of courses in Systems Engineering broadly, and then encourages specialization in one of several emphasis, or subplan, areas. In our specific case, we plan to offer emphasis subplan areas in: Energy Systems; Unmanned Aircraft Systems; and Aerospace Systems. In support of this name change, we have directly expressed interest in the degree from industry partner Northrop Grumman—and will actively market this program to many other relevant industry partners. In addition, this degree represents the collaborative efforts of the College of Engineering and Mines and the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences.
