Accelerated B.S. in Elementary Education with a Master of Science in Reading Education

Admission Requirements for B.S. Elementary Education/M.S. in Reading Education

  • Students may apply to this program upon completion of 60 credits toward the bachelor’s degree or with an Associate’s degree. 
  • Students must have an overall G.P.A. of 3.00 or higher at the time of admission.
  • Passing scores on Praxis I

Degree Requirements:

  • Students seeking the M.S. in Reading Education through the Accelerated Elementary Education Program at the University of North Dakota must satisfy all the requirements for both the B.S. Ed and M.S degree. A maximum of 12 credits may be double counted toward each of the two degrees. 
  • Students that apply with an AA or AS degree from the following institutions will receive credit for all UND Essential Studies Requirements: NDUS, MNSCU, Washington, South Dakota University System, Wyoming Community Colleges, California Community Colleges, Oregon’s public colleges, and Montana University System and Tribal Colleges.  More information regarding these agreements can be found at: https://www.ndus.edu/makers/procedures/ndus/default.asp?SID=56. No waiver is applied for the AAS or AAA degree. 
  • Students that apply and are accepted with 60 credits towards the bachelor’s degree or an Associates degree, which is not articulated above, may have additional coursework to satisfy UND Essential Studies requirements.

  • North Dakota licensing requirements include:Physical, Life, Earth, and Space Science. For students who are missing any of these science requirements, two science areas may be taken as Independent Studies in the first two semesters of the program. As needed the courses would include T&L 471: Physical Science (2 credits), T&L 472: Life Science (2 credits), or T&L 473: Earth and Space Science (2 credits). 

Additional Elementary Education Requirements:

  • Passing PRAXIS I Core Academic Skills for Educator scores in the Praxis Series of tests in Math, Reading, and Writing. The exam should be taken before or while applying to the program as there are no pre-requisites for taking the test. 
  • After being admitted to the 4+1 Elementary Education with a Masters in Reading Program, you will be required to purchase the Field Experience Module of LiveText, a web-based tool required for all teacher candidates (available at: https://www.livetext.com/misk5/c1/purchase) ($139)
  • Completion of Successful Professional Disposition Reports (obtained while enrolled in the Education to Education course and in other field experiences throughout the program. 
  • Take the Praxis II Specialty Area Tests in Elementary Education before student teaching. 
  • Complete the application process for student teaching. 
  • Student Teaching will have additional fees for supervision costs.
  • Pass a FBI Criminal Background Investigation and fingerprinting test before being placed in a school.

Teacher Education Program Retention Policy: 

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA in all coursework
  • Complete all field experiences with a score of “satisfactory” on all Professional Disposition Reports
  • Receive a final grade of C or higher in all required coursework
